About C.R.I.
 
 
This institute is actively performing its activities through various sections viz.
• Research & Planning,
• Statistical Analysis,
• Library,
• Audio-Visual Documentation,
• Museum,
• Training and
• Publication.
 
With the help of applied research and evaluation studies/surveys, the Institute assists both the Backward Classes Welfare & Tribal Development Departments to take up various programmes for comprehensive development of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes of West Bengal. It conducts
 
• Research and documentation on different Communities on different aspects like Ethnographic /Educational Status/Health/Nutrition /Traditional Medicinal practices etc. on a regular basis.
 
• Evaluation Project on different ongoing Govt. Project/Scheme
 
• Studies to provide specific inputs for Identification of various Backward Communities (SC/ST/OBC).
 
CRI assist the Tribal Development Department for preparing database and documentation on the three PVTGs (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) consisting of the Toto, the Birhor & the Lodha as and when required.
 
CRI conducts training and awareness programs for the tribal people of the State and undertakes Community Research based intensive studies on Dance/ Music/Art and Crafts etc. CRI also conducts seminar, workshop, festival and fair on different aspects of tribal life and culture.
 
It publishes Bulletins, books and monographs on different aspects of backward communities (SC/ST/OBC) on regular basis.
 
This wing provides specific observations, comments and suggestions to State Scrutiny Committee for backward communities, OBC Commission, and for formation of various development boards. Also provide specific observation and comments to Assembly & Parliamentary Questions on the basis of information available in CRI.
 
CRI assist West Bengal OBC Commission in identification and enlisting of several communities as other backward classes. It provides valuable comments in formation of various developmental board in the State. Some special achievements of C.R.I.:

• CRI acts as the scientific and technical wing of Backward Classes Welfare Department, Govt. of West Bengal. It assists Tribal Development Department, Govt. of West Bengal in various research based activities.
 
• It has a huge collection of books and journals including several rare books which help many scholars, officials and researchers in their work.
 
• The office has an ethnographic museum, where displaying and showcasing of artifacts, craft of the tribal people of the state has been done. It also extend the museum to Boat museum, Puppet gallery and Kantha gallery.
